Army marksman and Asian Games gold medallist Jitu Rai was recommended for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award on August 17.
India’s ace shooter has brought the country many laurels in the past two years, including Gold and Bronze in Asian Games (2014), a Gold medal in Commonwealth Games (2014) and a Gold, two silver, and a bronze in ISSF World Cup (2014).
Though he was not able to secure any medal in the ongoing Rio Olympics, Jitu still managed to finish in the top 8 position of the Men’s 10m Air pistol event.
The news about his nomination was confirmed by National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) secretary Rajiv Bhatia who also added that they have recommended rifle shooters Apurvi Chandela, Gurpreet Singh and PN Prakash for the Arjuna Awards.
Khel Ratna is India’s highest sporting honour and was last given to tennis star Sania Mirza in 2015.
If the recommendation is approved, Rai would receive the award on August 29 on the occasion of National Sports Day.
