Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das on November 15 cleared the air about various rumours that are going on social media with regards to the new currency notes and demonetization of old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes.

Das said that many people have started various rumors on social media, which is now creating panic and urged people not to believe them as everything was under control.

He further added that many have taken advantage of demonetization and surged prices of various commodities like salt.

He once again ensured people that there was enough salt in the country and there was no reason for its price to surge.

With regards to the new currency, and people calling it fake because it was losing colour, Das explained that the ink used in these currencies were ‘Intaglio ink’ which has been used by RBI many times.

He further clarified that if these currencies didn’t lose ink, that is when people should worry.

As for the news that various government hospitals and pharmacies are not accepting old currency, Das said that any such incidence should be immediately brought forward to the government.

The government on November 8 had discontinued the use of old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes. The move over the days created chaos amongst people, giving rise to various rumors about demonetization and the new currency notes.
