Magnitude 7.9 Earthquake Hits Indonesia; Epicenter 10 Km Deep Inside Indian Ocean

A massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit just off the western coast of Indonesia’s main island of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean.

A tsunami warning has been issued and is expected to hit the Indonesian coast.

High waves will also hit the south western coast of Sri Lanka and south Nicobar Islands.

The quake brings back the horrific memories of December 26, 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed over 2,00,000 lives.

The epicenter of the quake that hit 19:49 local time (12:49 GMT) was 808km (502 miles) southwest of the city of Padang, and 10km deep.

Australia, too, has issued tsunami warnings along the country’s east coast. Meanwhile, people are praying for friends and family on Twitter.
