India’s 16-member squad for the upcoming Rio Olympics has been announced by Hockey India president Narinder Batra.
Though, the men’s team had familiar names making the list, the biggest surprise of the evening was the fact that Sardar Singh had relinquished the role of captain and the team was now being led by goalkeeper PR Sreejesh.
Further, SV Sunil was named as the vice captain of the team and it was officially announced that Birendra Lakra would not be part of the team due to an injury.
On the women’s team front, Sushila Chanu would be leading the team while Ritu Rani has been left out.
Ritu, during the preparatory camp had shown improvement in her performance and even had attitude issues according to staff.
In Ritu’s absence India’s forward line would be held by Rani Rampal, while Deepika would be vice-captain of the team.
