Seven people were killed and over 70 injured at the ongoing Ujjain Simhastha Kumbh Mela on May 5 when strong winds fell a pandal.
An unexpected change in the weather brought heavy rains, winds and thundershowers in Ujjain.
Rains and winds uprooted many pandals and triggered a stampede. Mela officials said that the deaths did not occur due to the stampede.
Ujjain Superintendent of Police Manohar Verma said that one woman who died was struck by lightning.
The authorities were prepared for stampede like situation on the days of the ‘shahi snan’ – April 22, May 9 and May 21.
But today’s downpour and the devastation caught the administration unawares.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the deaths.
The injured are being treated at the hospital.
