A dog that was left to die by its owner in France has sparked immense outrage on social media sites. The 21-year-old owner, who denies having buried the dog, has since been arrested by the police.
A man walking his dog in Carrieres-sur-Seine, west of Paris, on Saturday, discovered the French mastiff buried till its neck.
The man posted pictures on Facebook with the text: ‘Only her head was visible and it was difficult to see given the amount of earth covering her.’ In the pictures, you can see the man’s dog, helping to dig the buried dog out.
A police source stated that the dog’s lead was attached to a sack of gravel to keep her buried and that she was surrounded by stones.
The man called the emergency services and the shocked and dehydrated dog was taken to a nearby veterinary clinic. Police sources also said that the owner’s version of events was not “very plausible”.
“The dog is more than 10 years old and suffers from arthritis. It’s difficult to imagine her running away,” the source said.
The owner will now be put on trial for animal cruelty and could be sentenced to a prison term of two years and be forced to pay a fine of up to €30,000 (Rs 2,09,00,267).
An online petition asking for maximum sentence for the owner had received 135,000 signatures by Wednesday. Pictures: Pedro Dinis
