It isn’t often you see love win against the odds. It’s even rarer to find two women fight the world, and all its prejudices, and stick it out together. Ellen and Portia fought for their love. And now, eight years later, they’re still the role models for gay kids the world over.
They made waves when they announced their wedding eight years ago. And on August 16, 2008, the day they got married, they went down in LGBT history as the most famous lesbian couple to walk down the aisle.
They made it possible for gay women (and men) all over the world — in small towns in America, and in faraway, homophobic countries like India and Pakistan — to look forward to a future, to hope to make a life with their partners, to someday be able to build a world with the person they love.
