Mustafa disembarked the plane with his hands up and threw some items on the ground, which were picked up by police and are being examined.

EgyptAir confirmed that all the hostages have been released.

His arrest followed a comment by an Egyptian Foreign Ministry official, who said: ‘He’s not a terrorist, he’s an idiot. Terrorists are crazy but they aren’t stupid. This guy is.’

The EgyptAir Boeing 737-800 was carrying around 60 passengers and was making the short 45-minute flight from the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria to the Egyptian capital of Cairo when it was diverted and made an emergency landing.

After negotiations, all passengers were freed from the plane except for the flight crew and five foreign nationals. Later on, seven more people who had remained with the hijacker onboard – were seen leaving the plane.
