Indian Gymnast Dipa Karmakar on July 6 was left pleasantly surprised when she was told that International parent body of Gymnastics – Federation de Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) is bestowing her with ‘Gymnaste de classe mondiale’ (Gold Pin).
The honour officially makes her a ‘World Class Gymnast’.
Karmakar, who is India’s first and only Gymnast ever to have qualified for the Olympics, earned the Gold Pin for her performance in the World Championships 2015.
In November 2015, Dipa had finished 5th in the vaulting apparatus finals.
The Gold Pin is awarded to the top 30 qualifiers in multiple apparatus events during the finals of World event and is a once-in-a-career induction into gymnastics’ elite.
The honour mostly goes to gymnasts from Russia, US, Japan and China.
