India’s former captain and wicket-keeper MS Dhoni and his Jharkhand cricket team members had to be evacuated from their hotel in Delhi when a fire broke out at ITC Welcome shortly before 6 am.

The team which was to play its Vijay Hazare Trophy semi-final match on March 17, was supposed to leave the hotel shortly when they heard about the fire and were asked to evacuate.

The team, who were having breakfast at the time, immediately rushed out of the hotel but left their clothes and equipment in their rooms.

Owing to the circumstances, the match has now been postponed to March 18.

Dhoni and his teammates were evacuated with around 540 guests and have now been moved to a new location.

According to the police, the fire broke out in a showroom in the hotel, and they are now trying to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.

Though both teams were at the ground while the fire was being brought under control, the BCCI felt that postponing the match would be better since the Jharkhand players were mentally disturbed by the incident.

“When we were having breakfast at the restaurant…suffocating smell of the smoke alarmed us. We ran for our lives.” – A Jharkhand player.
