Eight Teachers Who Forced Dalit Students To Clean Toilets In Tamil Nadu Finally Held

Just when we ‘assumed’ we are done with untouchability in our nation, this case should make us rethink.

According to IBN live, eight teachers were held for allegedly forcing Dalit students of standard VI to VIII to clean toilets. The incident took place in a government-aided school in Kalakkad in Tamil Nadu.

The move came after affected parents, locals and political outfits staged a series of agitations demanding action against the teachers. They alleged that Dalit students had been cleaning the toilets for the past more than eight months.

However, action has been taken 20 days after issue came to light. Even though complaints were filed under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

According to The New Indian Express, a mother of a VII standard student said,

“My son was unable to eat. He later revealed that he was forced to clean the school toilets with his hand. Besides that, teachers also threatened kids with punishments and low marks if they failed to do the cleaning or revealed anything about it.”

District Collector M Karunakaran has assured that necessary action would be taken against those found guilty.
