With no major incident of violence reported in Jamshedpur on Wednesday, the imposed curfew was relaxed for four hours, barring the affected places that had witnessed clashes between two communities over an alleged incident of eve-teasing.

Deputy Commissioner Amitabh Kaushal said:

“We have extended four hours of relaxation in the curfew from 1 PM to 5 PM in Jamshedpur, but not in the affected police station areas of Mango, Azadnagar, Olidih and MGM.”

Trouble erupted in Jamshedpur’s Mango area on Monday night after three motorcycle-borne men tried to snatch the scarves off some girls who were coming out of a theatre. The men also brandished pistols and knives and hurled abuses at people who reacted angrily.

The administration on Tuesday night issued orders to clamp curfew and requested that people not move out of their homes. At least 30 people, including policemen, were injured in the clashes. Several shops and business establishments were ransacked and vehicles burnt.

Additional Director General of Police, SN Pradhan, said that there had been no further incidents since last night. On Tuesday, the government had sent 15 companies of paramilitary forces to control the situation.

Around 103 rioters have been booked till now. Police said they will be sent to judicial custody after questioning.
