A 23-year- old Congolese national was beaten to death on the night of May 20 after he got into a scuffle with a group of men in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area.
Though what provoked the attack is yet to be determined, Police are also probing if it was a racial attack against the African youth.
The victim has been identified as M.T. Olivia who taught foreign languages at a private institute in Delhi. According to the police, the incident took place at around 11.45 pm when Olivia got into an heated argument with three local men in Kishangadh. As the argument escalated, the group pounced on him and even chased him for about 20-25 meters.
After chasing him down they attacked Olivia again and pelted him with stones.

It was then that another group of locals rescued Olivia and called the police. He was then rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
On inquiry, the second group of locals couldn’t identify the culprits or determine what had led to the argument. The police has thus started an investigation:
“A case of murder has been registered. We are checking CCTV footage to identify the accused…The case is being probed from all angles including robbery and a possible racist attack on the African national.”
Police is also trying to determine what Olivia was doing in the area at that hour as he lived in Delhi’s South Extension almost 12 kms away.
