Children Risk Their Lives Every Day To Earn Money From Passengers On Public Transport

Every year, more and more children end up on India’s streets. Mostly ignored and sometimes cruelly treated, these children grow up risking their lives on a daily basis just to make ends meet. While other kids grow up feeling relatively safe and well-provided-for, these children face great hardship to get the bare essentials.

The harsh reality of life is that children who end up on the streets have to work to survive. They end up in factories, become rag pickers, are forced into begging rings or clean public areas in the hope of getting tips.

Child on train

Children who try to eke out a living on public transport, like the boy in the photo, usually have to get off when the train or bus starts moving, which is a dangerous time to dismount.

However, for these kids, its perhaps less of a hazard than some of the other godawful things that can happen to them while they try to survive on roadsides.
