Among the martyrs in the Bangladesh Liberation War, known in India as the Indo-Pak War 1971, were 1668 soldiers of the Indian Army.

In a great display of gratitude to India, Bangladesh has decided to reward each of the Indian martyrs with Rs.5 lakh, to be given to their families. The total amount will come to around Rs.84 crores.

The decision was announced by Bangladeshi Minister of Liberation War Affairs A.K.M. Mozammel Huq on Saturday.

According to The Hindu, the reward will be handed over to the Indian Government by Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at New Delhi during her official trip between December 18 and 20.

Hasina will also be handing over a letter of gratitude to the families of the martyrs.

The process of identifying the Indian martyrs had been initiated by Bangladesh. The gesture was praised by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the country in June 2015.

The Bangladesh Liberation War ended with the creation of the country, which was earlier known as East Pakistan.
