Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev believes if Priyanka Gandhi comes at the forefront then the Congress, which has recently faced an embarrassing defeat in assembly polls in four major states, may give a tough challenge to the governing BJP.

During an interview to a news channel, he said, “BJP will have to work hard if Priyanka Gandhi takes charge of the Congress.”

He also said that he can never forget what Sonia Gandhi did to him. He was referring to police action against him during Anna Hazare’s movement against corruption.

In wake of the upcoming Assembly Elections in Uttar Pradesh, there have been demands within the party to bring Priyanka Gandhi to the helm.

Recently, election strategist Prashant Kishor said that there would be a considerable increase in vote share of the party if Priyanka Gandhi is made the face of party during the 2017 Uttar Pradesh polls, which was supported by most of the block-unit chiefs of Congress party.

Even the JD(U) is also keen on having Congress star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the face of the Grand Alliance mascot in UP.

The recent results in Assembly elections are widely seen as the party’s dynasty running out of charisma and its political ideas running out of steam. It could also delay the elevation of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and lead to demands within the party for immediate organisational revamp.

The party has lost nine assembly elections after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections when its tally had touched a historic low of 44 seats. The Congress was on the winning side in Bihar elections but as the third junior partner of the alliance.

Congress leaders talked of introspection and correctives as results showed that geographic spread of Congress rule in states had reduced to a few states – two states in north India (Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand), one in south India (Karnataka); three states in east India (Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya).

Congress president Sonia Gandhi said the party will introspect reasons for its loss and rededicate itself to the service of people with greater vigour.

Political pundits believe that the party does not have a proper strategy to win states and this is crucial for it to stay in serious contention for power in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
