The multi-agency search team received input from locals that the terrorists were hiding in Khejri village, 10 km from Bhopal. When asked to surrender, they started firing, resulting in a gun battle which lead to all of them getting killed in the encounter.

While in hiding, the SIMI men were allegedly involved in terror activities and heinous crimes in several states including Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Many of them were linked to home-grown terror outfits like the Indian Mujahedeen.

Earlier, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Bhupendra Singh said an alert has been sounded across the state, and suspended five prison officers with immediate effect for negligence in duty. The state government has also announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh each on the heads of the activists.

During a recent coordination meeting chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had asked jail authorities to be more vigilant, said the home minister.

On October 30, these terrorists escaped the ‘high security’ prison in Bhopal after killing the security guard using steel plate and scaling the prison wall with the help of bed sheets.

The Union Home Ministry sought a report from the Madhya Pradesh government about the jail break.

What’s surprising is that this was not the first time that SIMI terrorists have escaped from jail in Madhya Pradesh.

In 2013, seven terror suspects from SIMI cut the iron bars of a Khandwa jail’s bathroom window and escaped after stabbing two security guards. They stole rifles and wireless sets.
