Soon to be Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on May 21 assured people that Assam will seal borders with Bangladesh within the next two years.
Sonowal, who would be Assam’s first BJP Chief Minister, is a product of the student movement that led the 1980’s anti-foreigners agitation.
He is, therefore, making the illegal immigrants matter his first priority as Chief Minister of Assam.
He and his party put issues of infiltration as one of the major agendas during the poll campaign and now plans to make it his government’s top priority.
He said that he spoke to Home Minister Rajnath Singh and added that it is the Home ministry that gave him the time frame for permanent sealing of the borders.
A barbed wire fence construction along the Indo-Bangla border is coming up, the Assam stretch of which would be over soon.
“As soon as the border is sealed permanently, the infiltration trend will stop automatically. Plus we will create awareness among the people to prevent infiltration.”
He added that he was against the now repealed IMDT Act and the final draft of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam would be published soon.

Once the draft is published it would be clear who are the citizens and who are the infiltrators and action will be taken against the latter as per existing law. Sonowal added that a ceremony like the one held in Wagah will be organised regularly along the Indo-Bangladesh border at Assam.
