Team India is on its Caribbean tour along with their new head coach Anil Kumble. India will soon be playing four test matches against West Indies starting from 21 July.
Anil Kumble got the tag ‘King of Kingston’ after he finished as the highest wicket-taker (23 wickets in four games) during India’s famous series win in the Caribbean in 2006 — he bowled a total of 223 overs throughout the four matches (which was also the most by an bowler in that series) — and seems to be the right choice for Team India’s boys as a coach.
Recently, via 30-second videos, Kumble told his fans that to excel in these matches, the boys are needed to be ‘boring’ in a session conducted on BCCI’s official Twitter handle.
A fans asked Kumble about a few main things he will be focusing on to improve the performance of the team.
To which the new coach replied:
From the bowling perspective, hitting good lengths consistently and being boring, as that’s what a player needs to do if he has to play Test cricket. In fielding, the focus is definitely on catching. We all know how important catching is and that’s been the focus in the last couple of weeks.
Kumble also shared that the condition of the pitch will also play a key role in team India’s win.
The next question was about what kind of players will dominate in the West Indies conditions?
All the players have their own role, Kumble said:
Spinners and fast bowlers have an equal role to play. But the wickets in the West Indies have been on the slower side so far, so I believe the likes of R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Amit Mishra will have an important role to play if we are to win the Test series.
According to Team India’s coach, test matches are a true test of all three departments. Players have to focus on their fitness as well. That’s the reason why these matches are called ‘tests’.
Another fan asked about R Ashwin’s grooming and will that help Team India to balance overseas?
To this, Kumble said that Ashwin is an extremely capable batsman:
I certainly believe Ashwin is an extremely capable batsman. We are also blessed with some of the other lower middle-order batsmen who are extremely capable at the Test level. So, the focus is not just on the bowlers bowling but also bowlers batting. And I’m sure they’ll not only contribute in upcoming series but also in the future as well.
Certainly, with this question & answer round, we can make out that Team India’s coach Anil Kumble is quite confident about his teams capabilities. We hope that Team India will make us proud and prove that Kumble is absolutely a right choice.
