Former cricketer and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Sourav Ganguly has silenced the critiques who claimed Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan took Rs 4 crore to sing the national anthem at Eden Gardens on March 19.
Ganguly, went on record after the match and in an interview said:
“Mr Bachchan is one and only, a special person. I am eternally grateful to him. Can you ever imagine someone paying Rs 30 lakh of his own pocket to perform? He booked his own flight, bought his own tickets and even paid the hotel bills. I literally begged him to take some money but he said that I am doing it for love and there is no question of money being involved.”
The Bollywood legend had given a soulful rendition of the national anthem before the World T-20 match between India and Pakistan.
His performance had not only given goosebumps to many, but also set a perfect mood for the high voltage match.
Unfortunately, soon after the match began, a news report went viral on social media that claimed Sr. Bachchan had used the opportunity to earn Rs. 4 crore just to sing the national anthem and to be present at the event. Though many celebrities do take money to perform at events, it is not a crime.
Unfortunately this news left many fans aghast, with few even calling his patriotism towards the country an ‘act’.
Ganguly, also said that even when the probability of the match taking place was in doubt due to the rain, Bachchan didn’t give up and surprised many at CAB when he insisted on a rehearsal of the national anthem for the event.
