At least one student was killed and 14 others were wounded in the latest attack by militants on American University of Afghanistan in Kabul on Wednesday.

The attack comes just weeks after two university professors — an American and an Australian — were kidnapped at gunpoint near the school.

Gunfire and explosion rocked the university with foreign staff and hundreds of students trapped inside.

The senior interior ministry official told Reuters that Afghan forces had surrounded the university compound. “Several gunmen attacked the American University in Kabul and there are reports of gunfire and explosions. They are inside the compound and there are foreign professors along with hundreds of students,” official said.

Amongst them, Associated Press photojournalist and and Pulitzer Prizewinner Massoud Hossaini, was stuck but he escaped.

He said,”I went to the window to see what was going on, and I saw a person in normal clothes outside. He shot at me and shattered the glass.”

He added, “As we were running I saw someone lying on the ground face down, they looked like they had been shot in the back.”

Many who managed to escaped said:

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
