After meeting External Affairs Minster Sushma Swaraj, African envoys decided to keep their faith alive on the Narendra Modi government.
After receiving assurances from Swaraj, an African diplomat said that decades-old bilateral relationship between them was much bigger than unfortunate episodes of assault.
He went on to add
“The response that we received from the MEA and other authorities have been assuring. They have announced that they will take action against the culprits. We respect Delhi’s move made by the political leadership as well as the senior officials. We are awaiting action and hopeful that corrective measures will be taken.”
The diplomats also noted that the series of steps had been taken by Swaraj and senior MEA officials, and they are happy with it. They even noted President Pranab Mukherjee’s statement that was given few days back and called it reassuring.
Swaraj had assured African students and diplomats that effective action would be taken against the culprits that were involved in recent attacks
She said that the attacks were non-racist in nature.
“All criminal acts should not be construed as racial attacks…these were not premeditated acts against a particular community, rather these were spontaneous attacks perpetrated by anti-social and criminal elements.”
She also said that a plan has been chalked out as per which the Minister of State along with the Secretary will visit every metro city and hold discussions with African students.
