Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on July 27, laid the foundation stone for construction of memorial for Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
The event was organised on the first death anniversary of Dr Kalam, who passed away in 2015 due to cardiac arrest.
While laying down the stone, Parrikar said the construction work would begin soon and added that the memorial will be built in record time.
The foundation stone was laid at Dr. Kalam’s burial site Pei Karumbu in Rameswaram which is around 600 km from Chennai.
The event was also attended by Urban Development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and Highways and Shipping minister Pon Radhakrishnan, and other ministers from the Tamil Nadu government.
To mark the occasion, a bronze life-size statue of Kalam was also unveiled, which Naidu said would be akin to a mosque, a temple and a church for the people.

“It is to tell the future generation that such a great person was born in this pious land.”
