Subramanian Swamy, the fearless Janata Party leader (which has recently merged with the BJP) is most famous as a fearless political and a crusader against black money and corruption. He played a central role in exposing the 2G spectrum scam, which led to the arrest of A Raja. However, this Tamil Brahmin, who began his academic career as a Harvard professor at a very young age, has remained away from limelight for most part of his life. But, he’s surely a man of substance whose achievements are of a somewhat different nature than others. So, here are 7 things you probably don’t know about Dr. Subramanian Swamy. Take a look!
7. Dislike for Vajpayee:
Not many of our readers would know that Subramanian Swamy always held a certain aversion for one of the tallest leaders of BJP. The Janata Party leader is undoubtedly a bête noire of former prime minister of India. Dr. Subramaniam Swamy alleges Vajpayee of tricking the late prime minister Morarji Desai, during Janata Party rule into keeping him out of the senior cabinet by bestowing him with the rank of minister of state. Swami has several times casted aspersions about the private life of Vajpayee through his blogs or interviews.
6. Mansarovar Yatra:
Swamy is the man who single handedly made it possible for the Hindu devotees to access the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage route. Although, claims made by Swamy himself are refuted by many Vajpayee supporters, the man is credited with normalizing and re-opening of the Kailash Mansarovar Pilgrimage route during his meeting with China’s supremo of the time (April 1981) Deng Xiaoping. The whole issue was reported in the media extensively.
5. Academician Turned Lawyer:
The feisty academician and veteran political leader is not a lawyer by traditional education practice. Having fought over 75 cases till now, the fire brand leader claims that he learned the nuances of the field through tutorial notes from eminent lawyers. Even his lawyer wife Roxanna played a major part in training him in the legal field. So, those who describe him a lawyer by education should first check their facts.
4. Dropped Out from Harvard:
Because Swamy proposed to deprive Muslims from voting unless they acknowledge belonging to a Hindu ancestry, Harvard University dropped his two summer economics courses taught by Dr. Swami from its curriculum.
3. Chinese Scholar:
The founding member of Janata Party, Dr. Subramanian Swamy is considered an authority on the comparative study of India and China. The intellectual political leader, who enjoys a huge following (especially from the youth) on social networking sites, is also an expert on Chinese/ Mandarin language. As per one of the anecdotes that also stands backed by Swami himself, he was challenged into learning Chinese language (one of the hardest languages the world over) within one year. Dr. Swami accepted the challenge and proved his mettle by mastering it within 3 months. This was something. Wasn’t it?
2. A Rare breed of Scholars:
Swamy graduated his BA (Hons.) in Mathematics from the prestigious Hindu College of Delhi University. The anecdotes involving him and the founding director of Indian Statistical Institute, P C Mahalanobis are very interesting. He took on the director, who was constantly failing him in examinations despite him being a sharp student, for his vested interests, by publishing a paper on Fractile Graphical Analysis that contested claims made by Mahalanobis earlier. The young mathematician not only avenged his loss, but also gained an offer from the prestigious Harvard University as a spin-off for his doggedness.
1. Emergency Days:
During India’s emergency days under the rule of Indira Gandhi, when almost every leader, whom the state (read Indira Gandhi) considered a threat for its existence, was put forcibly in jail or house arrest, here was a professor at Harvard who took to the system head on and in a typical Bollywood style. When arrest orders were out in his name, and all national airports were intimated to arrest Swamy on sight, the man not only reached the country of his birth (taking it on as a challenge), but also stepped inside the Parliament (in disguised form) and challenged the incumbent rule raining voice against him (and others like him). Interestingly, he even left the nation without getting trapped by security forces. This tells a lot about the courage this man had.
