It is not often that we feel proud as Indians today. Potholed roads, crime on rise, corruption, litter and many other social conditions, make us hang our head down. But then, there are those stars who shine on the global scene, making us proud to be Indians. It is very difficult to choose few Indians who make us feel proud, because our country has had her share of heroes. Add to that long list many of the unsung heroes who haven’t been noticed by anyone. 6. Amitabh Bachchan
Named ‘One man Industry’ by none other than the French director François Truffaut, Amitabh Bachchan is an actor who has performed different roles in more than 180 films. He has won numerous awards including the Padma Shri in 1984 and the Padma Bhushan in 2001. It was a proud moment for India when BBC News Poll named him the Actor of the Millennium ahead of such luminaries as Charles Chaplin, Sir Laurence Olivier, and Marlon Brando. 5. Narayana Murthy
The greatness of this man lies in his simplicity. Though he is famous as the founder of Infosys, Mr. Murthy’s main contribution has come in outsourcing IT services. It was the Global Delivery Model which he developed, articulated, designed and implemented which has become the foundation of ever growing outsourcing industry in India. He has been recognized internationally. He was named as one of the 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time, by the Fortune magazine in 2012 and among the 10 most-admired global business leaders in 2005 by the Economist. He is the winner of Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
4. Sachin Tendulkar
Widely popular as the ‘God of Cricket’, Sachin Tendulkar is hailed as the greatest batsman of modern generation by the world, whereas other calls the greatest cricketer of all time. Yet, he remained a humble person throughout his career spanning 24 years, which was proved through the heart touching retirement speech
he gave at the Wankhede Stadium. The list of his achievements and awards would run into pages. There is no dispute about the fact that he has made every Indian proud.
3. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
The former president of India is popularly known as the ‘Missile Man of India’ for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology and also making Agni, Prithvi, Akash, Trishul and Nag missiles a household names in India. His dedication and determination raised the defense power of India to that of international levels. He is worthy winner of Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. Kalam is known for his motivational speeches and interaction with the student community in India and very popular for his humility, sincerity, dedication and love for children.
2. Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa was Albanian by birth, but she chose to be the citizen of India. Her unselfish service to fellow human beings won her the giving her the title “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta”. Though she has won many recognitions and awards, there is no need to talk what she received, as it is what she gave back to the world that made the difference. She lived her life showering love on the people who were shunned by the society. There is no wonder Indians feel proud of her.

No single Indian has left such an inedible mark on world, as Mahatma Gandhi has done. He has been a great inspiration to many leaders for decades. Though Godse was successful in assassinating him, he could not assassinate the legacy of truth, non-violence and satyagraha left behind by Mahatma Gandhi. Like every person in this list, Mahatma Gandhi was also a simple man who walked around in Khadi clothes. The father of the nation, makes every Indian proud.
