Manna Dey, the last of ‘The Five Galaxies’ of Indian playback singing, departed for his heavenly abode on October 24, 2013. He was 94. Born Prabodh Chandra Dey on May 1, 1919, Manna Dey debuted in Hindi film Tamanna in 1942 and never looked back since. Honoured with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Manna Dey sang more than 3000 songs in various languages but is best known for songs in Hindi and those sung in his mother tongue Bengali. A contemporary of Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Mohammed Rafi and Hemanta Kumar, Manna Dey carved his own space through his flawless rendition of classical compositions. Together with the other four, Dey formed what we call ‘The Five Galaxies’. With a very heavy heart, we present a list of a few chosen Hindi songs sung by Manna Dey. Since all his songs were best in themselves, this list deviates from our standard top-ten order.

Aao Twist Karein

Ae Bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo

Ae Mere Pyare Watan

Ae Meri Zohara Zabien

Chalat Musafir

Hum kale hain to kya hua dilwale hai

Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje

Kaise Samjhaun

Kasme Waade Pyar Wafa Sab

Laaga Chunri Mein Daag

Pucho Na Kaise Rain Bitayi

Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua

Tujhe Suraj Kahon Ya Chanda

Tu Pyar Ka Saagar Hai

Yaari Hai Imaan Mera

Ye Raat Bheegi Bheegi

Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli
