I am sure there are many people witnessing this phenomenon, where you see repeated numbers (specifically 11) around you. This was not always the case with me. It only started in last two years. Also, the phenomenon is said to be contagious, which means, once you know about the phenomenon, it starts happening to you too.
Why are so many people seeing it right now? Is it a biological phenomenon that aligns our body and mind to form a habit of looking at a clock during this time of the day. If this is so, why do we keep on seeing it in places where we don’t expect it to see, e.g. a food bill.
The phenomenon is widely reported across the world. A mere search of 11:11 gives you many such accounts.
Some have also reported that after coming across 11:11 they developed a sense of witnessing repeated numbers such as 09:09 on digital clock or 1313 on a car number plate or a price tag of 99.99.
People have also related this to spirituality. There are phases when one starts seeing these repeated numbers and often links it to the spiritual awakening, a higher sense of reception towards universe.
Theories behind 11:11
There are many theories around this phenomenon. The most common is explanation through post-hoc reasoning, resulting in false positives. Confirmation bias also plays a role in explaining the 11:11 phenomenon.
Confirmation Bias, also called Confirmatory Bias or Myside Bias, is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms one’s preexisting beliefs or hypotheses while giving disproportionately less consideration to alternative possibilities.
If you have a favorite number (for whatever reason), you soon begin to see that number playing some kind of role in your life. You look back, connect the dots and you find that your favorite number is not just a number but has an influence on your choices.
Your favorite cricket player wears the number 10 and it also appears on the admit card of your college id or the last two digits of the mobile number. You are now predisposed to recognize this number whenever it appears around you.
This happens when you begin to notice any number frequently, you start asking yourself what is so significant about this number. Why is this appearing before you? You tend to attach a meaning to it, this is what stimulus does. Our minds are always searching for answers. Deep down everyone knows the futility of living a life full of questions. Hence, the quest for answers. So, your subconscious tries to decipher any information out of the repeated pattern that you witness.
The holy flow of synchronicity is what people generally refer to while explaining the 11:11 phenomenon. The repeated appearance of 11:11 on your digital clock means you are part of the flow. In the words of David Wolfe –
our digital system of time keeping and of counting time itself, is linear. It does not allow for the non-linear, irrational element of life to come in. However, numbers like 11:11, 4:44, 12:34, or 1:23 do allow the recognition of hidden connections between seemingly different aspects of life that if listened to may guide us to even greater synchronicity or even hyper-synchronicity — an essential part of the magic of life.
The Mayan ConnectionThe Mayans were an advanced, ancient Mexican civilization with high skills in the field of Astronomy and Math. Their 26,000 year old calendar officially ended on 21st December, 2012 at 11:11, adding more intrigue to this number.
The Mayan calendar was associated with ‘the turning of ages’, hence this date/time marks the rebirth of our world, according to Mayans. This new world we are moving in is all about ‘one-ness’ rather than separation. Some believe if you witness the 11:11 phenomenon, you are supposed to spread the message of ‘we are all one’ across the world.
As for all ‘the end of the world’ interpretations, we are seeing the end of the world as we know it. It means the end of greed, hatred, separateness and disconnectedness.
