The year 2015 has been an exceptionally good year for India when it comes to the field of sports. Like every year, 2015 too saw many ups and down, but the highlight was an exceptionally good year for many Indian sporting greats and the progress in almost all sporting events that India took part in.

1. Sania Mirza – Tennis – World No. 1 WTA Doubles Ranking

  • Won ten doubles titles that includes two Grand Slam titles – Wimbledon and US Open, and WTA Finals
  • Named along with doubles partner Martina Hingis as the ITF World Champion
  • Achieved career best World Number 1 ranking in doubles – first and only Indian women to do so

2. Saina Nehwal – Badminton – Women’s World No. 1 Ranking

  • Reached World Championships, All England Open and China Open finals

3. Ravichandran Ashwin – Cricket – ICC World No. 1 Test Bowler

  • Became ICC’s No. 1 Test bowler
  • First Indian bowler since Bishen Bedi in 1973 to achieve the milestone of finishing the year on top
  • Became world’s leading wicket-taker in Tests (as of date)
  • In 9 test matches, he picked up 62 wickets including 7 five-wicket hauls and 2 ten-wicket hauls
  • Became the fastest Indian ever to take 150 test wickets

4. Pankaj Advani – Cue Sports – 15th World Snooker Championship

  • Won both Billiards and Snooker title in National Billiards and Snooker Championships

  • Won IBSF World Billiards Championship 2015

5. Anirban Lahiri – Golf – First Indian in the Presidents Cup squad

6. Vijender Singh – Boxing – First Indian To Go Pro

  • Left behind an illustrious amateur boxing career and turned to professional boxing
  • Made his pro debut historic by knocking out Britain’s Sonny Whiting at the Manchester Arena
  • In his second pro match knocked out Dean Gillin in the first round itself
  • Finished his debut year in professional boxing with a career record 3-0

7. Dipa Karmakar – Gymnastics – First Indian To Reach World Artistic Gymnastics Championships

  • Won bronze medal at the 2015 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
  • Won 5 gold medals in National Games 2015- individual all-round, table vault, balancing beam, uneven parallel bars and floor exercises.
  • Became first Indian to qualify for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships

8. Rajat Chauhan – Archery – 1st Indian individual to a win medal at Archery World Championships

  • Created history by winning silver in the World Archery Championships
  • First Indian Compound archer to reach World Archery Championships Finals in individual event
  • First Indian every to reach the finals of Archery World Championships

9. Shubham Jaglan – Golf – First Indian to win Junior World Golf Championships and IJGA World Stars of Junior Golf Title

  • Won the Junior World Golf Championships
  • Won the IJGA World Stars of Junior Golf title
  • First Indian ever to win both the above titles in the same year
